    Arthroscopic Surgery for the Shoulder

    Common Shoulder Conditions Treated

At Dines Orthopedics we specialize in arthroscopic shoulder surgery. With arthroscopy we can diagnose and treat a variety of joint injuries and diseases. Our NYC Orthopedic is able to treat problems inside a joint without leaving a large scar or prolonged period of being out of work or physically activity. Contact us if you have questions about the procedure or want to schedule a consultation.

    1. Rotator Cuff Tears: One of the most frequent reasons for shoulder arthroscopy, rotator cuff tears involve repairing the torn tendons that stabilize the shoulder joint.
    2. Shoulder Impingement Syndrome occurs when the shoulder blade rubs against the rotator cuff, causing pain and inflammation. Arthroscopy can relieve this by removing inflamed tissue or bone spurs.
    3. Labral Tears: The labrum is the cartilage that lines the shoulder socket. Tears here, often caused by trauma or repetitive motion, can be addressed through arthroscopy.
    4. Frozen Shoulder: Also known as adhesive capsulitis, this condition results in stiffness and pain. Arthroscopy can release the tight joint capsule, improving mobility.

Arthroscopy can help with arthritis and osteoarthritis as well.  Our surgeons are able to remove inflamed joint tissue, loose cartilage fragments, and bone spurs, contributing to pain and restricted movement. The arthroscope provides a clear view of the joint through small incisions, enabling precise treatment. While it does not cure arthritis, arthroscopy can significantly reduce pain, improve joint function, and delay the progression of the disease, enhancing the patient’s quality of life.

    Arthroscopic surgery in New York
Arthroscopic surgery, a minimally invasive surgical procedure, has revolutionized the treatment of various joint issues, particularly in the shoulder and knee. By allowing orthopedic surgeons to diagnose and treat a joint through a small incision, arthroscopy offers patients faster recovery times, less postoperative pain, and reduced risk of complications compared to traditional open surgery.

    Procedure

If you have questions about how to prepare for your procedure or what the surgery involves you can contact us and we will walk you through what you need to know. Here is brief explanation of what you can expect when you arrive for your minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery in New York.

    • Preparation: The patient is given anesthesia, and the shoulder is sterilized.
    • Incisions: Small incisions are made around the shoulder joint.
    • Insertion of the Arthroscope: A small camera, the arthroscope, is inserted through one of the incisions, projecting images of the joint onto a monitor.
    • Treatment: Specialized instruments are inserted through other incisions to repair or remove damaged tissue.
    • Closure: The incisions are closed with sutures or sterile strips.

    Recovery

Arthroscopy may leave you feeling sore or still for a few days to week. Our team will recommend any of the following to help you manage any pain or discomfort you may experience post-operation.

    • Immobilization: The shoulder is often immobilized with a sling.
    • Physical Therapy: Essential for regaining strength and mobility.
    • Pain Management: Pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medications help manage discomfort.

    Common Knee Conditions Treated

Dines Orthopedics also uses minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery to diagnose and treat injuries and ailments to the knee. Arthroscopic knee surgery is a great option for those experiencing debilitating knee pain. If you or a loved one have experienced any of the following knee injuries you may want to consider arthroscopy.

    1. Meniscus Tears: These cartilage tears that cushion the knee joint are common in athletes and can be trimmed or repaired arthroscopically.
    2. Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Tears: Arthroscopy is used to reconstruct the torn ACL using a graft.
    3. Patellar Tendinitis: Inflammation of the patellar tendon, often due to overuse, can be treated through arthroscopic techniques.
    4. Cartilage Damage: Loose fragments of cartilage or damaged areas can be smoothed or removed.

    Procedure

Ask our orthopedic knee surgeon if you have questions about preparing for the procedure or what the surgery includes.

    • Preparation: Administration of anesthesia and sterilization of the knee.
    • Incisions: Small incisions are made around the knee joint.
    • Insertion of the Arthroscope: The arthroscope is inserted, and images of the joint are displayed on a monitor.
    • Treatment: Surgical instruments are used to repair, remove, or reconstruct damaged tissue.
    • Closure: The incisions are closed with sutures or sterile strips.

    Recovery

Our team will help you with your post operation care. We recommend a combination of the following for less pain in the afflicted area.

    • Weight Bearing: Patients may need to limit weight-bearing activities initially, often using crutches.
    • Physical Therapy: Essential for restoring function and strength.
    • Pain Management: Prescribe pain medications are used to control pain and inflammation.

    Advantages of Arthroscopic Surgery

There are many advantages in choosing this minimally invasive orthopedic procedure.

    • Minimally Invasive: Smaller incisions lead to less scarring and reduced pain.
    • Quicker Recovery: Patients typically experience faster recovery times compared to open surgery.
    • Lower Risk of Infection: Smaller incisions decrease the risk of infection.
    • Precision: Enhanced visualization allows for more precise treatment of joint issues.
